After several years practicing in general liability insurance defense, Kevin Tyra became in-house counsel for the claim department of Physicians Insurance Company of Indiana, which later became Medical Assurance of Indiana, and later part of ProAssurance. As in-house counsel, Kevin served as counsel of record on 93 cases without a loss, representing physicians, nurses, dentists, and practice groups. He also served as a claim examiner at PICI/MAI for many other files, gaining insight into the perspective of the claim professional, including the importance of setting accurate reserves and seeing both the positives and negatives of a case as early as possible.
Since leaving MAI in 1999 to return to a law firm practice, Kevin has continued to represent medical professionals before medical review panels and in state and federal court.
Based on these years of experience, Kevin and Christie are sensitive to the special perspectives and needs of both the medical professional and the medical-liability claim professional. A medical liability claim isn’t just like any other insurance-defense claim. A malpractice claim goes to the core of the medical professional’s reputation. The medical-liability claim professional therefore is fully justified in expecting the very best from their panel counsel, including very prompt contact with the medical professional after the initial assignment, strict compliance with the professional liability carrier’s counsel guidelines, prompt and thorough reporting to the claim professional, involvement with experts at a suitable point in the case, and constantly keeping the medical professional and the claim professional apprised and in-the-loop regarding the plan for defending the case.
